Census snapshot: Metro Atlanta

The U.S. Census Bureau recently released its 2009 American Community Survey, which provides information about geographic areas with populations of 65,000 or more. Here's some of what the new statistics show about 28-county metro Atlanta:
5,476,664: Population. White residents made up 52.7 percent of the population; African-Americans, 31 percent; Hispanics, 10 percent; Asian-Americans, 4.3 percent; American Indians or Alaska natives, 0.2 percent; native Hawaiians or Pacific Islanders, 0.1 percent; and other races, 0.3 percent. About 1.5 percent identified as two or more races.
713,333: Residents born in another country -- about 13 percent of the area's population. That's almost the same percentage as in 2008 statistics, which showed that 13.2 percent of metro residents were born outside the U.S.
2.86: Average number of people per household, compared with 2.79 the year before.
34.1: Percentage of residents who have earned a bachelor's degree or higher, compared with 34.6 percent in 2008.
$27,380: Average annual income per person, down from $29,678 in 2008.
$187,300: Median value of owner-occupied homes, compared with $199,300 the year before.
