FYI: Specific Census information won’t be available for years

Q: Can you tell me when the 2010 Census will be available for genealogical and family history research. Sometime in 2011 or 2012?

A: As mandated by law, the national and state population counts must be delivered to the President of the United States by Dec. 31 of this year, according to Jenna Arnold, media specialist with the Census Bureau.

But this data is only used to determine seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

More information will follow by March 31, 2011, to help states redraw congressional, state and local legislative district boundaries, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, according to Arnold.

The specific information from Census records will not be released for 72 years. However, personal information from past years can be requested for a fee, Arnold said.
