National Briefing Rockies: Colorado : Redistricting Ruling
January 24, 2004
A three-judge federal panel rejected a challenge by the Republican-dominated Legislature over Colorado 's Congressional redistricting map, but stayed the ruling to see whether the Supreme Court took up the case. Republican lawyers had asked the judges to reinstate their own version of the map. At the heart of the dispute is who had the authority to draw the Congressional districts after the 2000 census. The State Supreme Court ruled last year that a state judge had that right because lawmakers failed to do so in time for the November 2002 elections. The judge's map bolsters the chances of Democrats in two of Colorado 's seven Congressional districts.
