State lawmakers will file a motion in Denver District Court today asking for more time in a congressional redistricting fight so they can focus on a battle in the Colorado Supreme Court.

Attorney Richard Westfall, who is representing the Colorado General Assembly in both courts, said Tuesday that he'll ask Denver District Court Judge Jeffrey Bayless for a three-week extension in filing briefs.

"We are seeking a three-week extension of time so we can focus on the Colorado Supreme Court proceeding," Westfall said.

Democrats filed suit in the Denver court May 9 to stop a Republican-crafted congressional redistricting bill that solidifies the GOP hold on five of Colorado 's seven congressional seats.

But shortly after the Denver court lawsuit was filed, Attorney General Ken Salazar filed suit in the Colorado Supreme Court to stop enforcement of the new map.

Salazar claims state lawmakers had no authority to redraw the boundary lines that were approved by a court in 2002 after a divided legislature could not agree on a plan.
